How to Get Smell Out of Gym Clothes

When deciding how to get smell out of gym clothes, first work out where the odour is coming from. Kit that smells again during wear may need a different treatment from clothing that became musty in a damp bag or picked up odour from the washing machine.

How Do You Get Smell Out of Gym Clothes?

Step 1: Remove and Air Damp Kit

Take sweaty clothing out of the gym bag as soon as possible. If it cannot be washed immediately, hang or spread it somewhere ventilated until laundry time. Leaving it compressed and wet allows mustiness to develop and makes the eventual wash more demanding.


Airing is not a replacement for laundering. It simply prevents damp kit from sitting in the conditions most likely to make the problem worse.

Step 2: Complete a Correct Normal Wash

Learning how to wash smelly gym clothes starts with checking the garment’s care symbols. 

Turn the item inside out where appropriate, use a detergent suitable for the fabric and follow the stated dose. Choose a programme and temperature allowed by the label, leave enough room for the clothes to move and dry the load fully before storage.

Do not assume that more detergent will clean better. Excess product may rinse poorly and leave residue behind.

The same applies to heat. A hotter cycle may exceed the care instructions without correcting the real problem.

Skip fabric conditioner unless the garment manufacturer confirms that it is suitable. 

Some performance-clothing brands advise against it because deposited conditioning ingredients can interfere with moisture-wicking finishes.

A non-bio detergent may be enough for lightly used kit that is washed promptly. Corrective treatment becomes more relevant when a smell is already established or returns after a normal wash.

Step 3: Use a Corrective Soak for Established Odour

Before you soak gym clothes, confirm that both the garment and the treatment are compatible.


For suitable activewear, the

  • Dissolve two tablespoons, approximately 40g, in warm water no hotter than 40°C.

  • Fully submerge the garments for 30 to 60 minutes.

  • Do not extend the soak beyond 60 minutes.

  • Rinse the clothing, then complete a normal machine wash.


Longer soaking is not automatically more effective and may increase the risk of colour fading.

GYMWASH is not suitable for wool, merino wool, silk, waterproof clothing or Gore-Tex.

Step 4: Repeat the Correct Process if Needed

One treatment may not remove residue that has accumulated through repeated wear and incomplete washing. If the first treatment improves the garment but does not fully resolve the smell, complete the wash and repeat.

Step 5: Check the Washing Machine

If several loads come out with a similar musty smell, the machine may be contributing. Odour in the drum or mould around the door seal can transfer back to clothing during a wash.

Dirt and detergent residue may also collect around the drawer, filter and other internal surfaces.
Use the manufacturer’s maintenance or drum-clean programme where provided.

Step 6: Decide Whether the Garment Can Still Be Recovered

Long-standing odour can become difficult to remove completely. Before replacing an item, confirm that you have followed a compatible wash and corrective treatment, that the washing machine is clean and that the smell is not being transferred from damp storage or the appliance.

Do Vinegar, Bicarbonate and Laundry Additives Help?

Neither vinegar nor bicarbonate provides the complete cleaning system needed to remove the oily and organic deposits associated with established activewear odour. They should not be treated as reliable alternatives to a properly formulated detergent.

When considering vinegar for gym clothes, remember that vinegar is not a detergent. It provides neither surfactants nor enzymes and is not an effective solution for oily body residue retained by synthetic fabrics. At most, it may have a limited role as a separate pre-treatment where the garment and appliance guidance permit it.


Bicarbonate of soda may offer limited deodorising value, but it does not remove oily deposits or provide a complete detergent system. Combining it with vinegar does not make either substance more effective. The acid and alkali partly neutralise one another, and the visible fizz is not additional cleaning power.


A laundry sanitiser may reduce microorganisms, while a scent booster changes how clothing smells. Neither action necessarily removes the retained deposits responsible for established odour. An oxygen-based additive may support compatible stain or odour treatment, but it provides only one cleaning route. It does not necessarily supply the surfactants, enzyme system or odour-binding ingredient found in a complete activewear detergent.


Always check garment and appliance instructions before using an additive. Do not mix vinegar or another acid with chlorine bleach, because the reaction can release toxic chlorine gas.
